In 1954 the National Gallery of Victoria's acquisition of Edwin Tanner's painting The Public Servant (1953) sparked a minor furore. At a conference of the Victorian Public Service Association, a member called for a protest against this "libel of public servants". The gallery was even asked to retitle it.
